ART

My interest and involvement in art and design goes back to childhood including studying Art through to A level. Although until recent years I had never exhibited as a visual artist, I trained and worked as an Interior Designer, gaining a Diploma from KLC School of Design in 2008. My passion for design extends into the presentation and creative look for any physical products and I as such I have tended to be very hands on with the concepts, design and photography for my album covers and book. Photography (mostly my own) features a lot in my art.

FREEDOM. The first series of pictures accompanies the songs from my third album which was released in October 2022 and is available on most streaming platforms but also on vinyl. For each song I have created a picture and for every copy of vinyl one of those pictures is included. Several of them appear below. They are A4 in size. Each one is printed on photographic paper and are an experimentation in the use of acrylic inks. I exhibited the pictures from Freedom and The Window to My Soul as part of East Kent Artists Open Houses 2022 at my home in Whitstable.

You will see below some pictures which I am calling ARTY FARTY FACES! These are fun pictures, photographs that I have taken and “embellished”. I am happy to take commissions-you provide the photograph, I do the rest. You will also see a series of photographic pictures where I have taken photographs, put them through filters and backlit them.

THE WINDOW TO MY SOUL. In late 2019/early 2020 I developed an exhibition from the images and poetry in the book, The Window to My Soul. It was shown for the first time in February 2020 (Creek Creative, Faversham, Kent) and was due to be shown at The Omnibus Theatre in South London in April followed by the Fishing Quarter Gallery in Brighton as part of Brighton Fringe in May 2020 with live performances of music and readings at all venues. Lockdown made it necessary to cancel the London and Brighton shows but in their place I did a 37 day online Tour. My “Alternative” Spring Tour 2020 can be viewed both on You Tube and across all of my social media pages.

For The Window to My Soul the choice of black and white with only gold leaf for colour, for the CD and book cover and the exhibition that followed was made to convey a stylish simplicity. It was also influenced by iconic album covers like The White Album.

Echoing the themes of the book and album, I made the deliberate decision to incorporate a mix of old and new, and in some ways, religious symbolism. This is highlighted in the image of my hands against the whitewashed graffiti wall in the derelict 18th century church that we used for the photoshoot, and contrasts with images of my own graffiti written on the rather more contemporary but equally symbolic wall outside Abbey Road Studios where the album was mastered.

The gold candelabra started as a prop because I felt it would be fitting for the church setting. It developed into a central image, burning candles evoking the themes of the passing of time and internal reflection. The candelabra was the one that worked and married well with the gold leaf imagery and the “selfie” of my eye and features quite prominently.

I worked with photography adding text and gold leaf. All original imagery (exc those specified) is my own work which I then convert from colour into black and white and explore different filters before embellishing with text, gold leaf and other effects. Dimensions quoted are for unframed.
